Heartworm in dogs and cats is a very big problem in Townsville, as we have so many mosquitoes and heartworm is spread through mosquitoes.

Heartworm can make your dog or cat very sick and

often results in death.

It is also very expensive and unpleasant to treat, especially if not treated properly by a vet.

Here are the major concerns:

Dogs and Cats over 6 months old need to be tested before starting any heartworm prevention treatment. Some heartworm treatments can can cause illness and even death if adult heartworm are already present.
Heartworm treatments need to be administered according to the correct weight of your dog or cat. Going over the dose rate is always better than under dosing. Sharing a tablet or treat to multiple pets can only be done when the manufacturer has indicated.
Missing a dose or being late is putting your pet at a much higher risk. This is a major concern that vets have warned against. Check the label and follow as directed.

Best Prevention Treatments:

The yearly injection is deemed as they most successful method of preventing heartworm. The treatment last 12 months and has the highest grace period. [Part of this success is that your pet is weighed, correct dosage calculated and administered and the owner is not having to remember to retreat every month :)]
